OR Controllers and Ideal Diodes

OR Controller and Ideal Diode ICs are power path management components designed to replace traditional Schottky ORing diodes in redundant power systems, high-current battery path switches, and reverse-voltage protection circuits. By driving an external N-channel power MOSFET to mimic a diode but with an extremely low on-resistance (RDSon), ideal diodes eliminate the significant forward voltage drop (and resulting heat generation) of classic diodes, maximizing system power efficiency.

Ideal diodes are critical in server power supplies, telecom backplanes, and redundant battery packs where thermal dissipation must be minimized. Key specifications focus on operating voltage range (typically 3V to 80V+), gate drive strength, reverse current turn-off speed (measured in nanoseconds to prevent reverse current flow to a faulted supply), forward regulation voltage, and package footprint.
