CODECs

CODEC (Coder-Decoder) ICs integrate both analog-to-digital converter (ADC) and digital-to-analog converter (DAC) functionalities onto a single silicon die, providing a highly integrated signal conditioning and interface solution for audio systems. By combining capture and playback paths, CODECs minimize PCB footprint, reduce power consumption, and streamline communication between digital host processors (such as application processors or baseband ICs) and physical microphones and speakers.

Modern audio CODECs often feature integrated programmable gain amplifiers (PGA), microphone bias generators, digital mixers, and built-in headphone amplifiers, along with basic DSP capabilities for equalization and volume control. Engineers evaluate CODECs based on sample rate support (typically up to 192kHz/24-bit or 384kHz/32-bit), channel count (mono, stereo, or multi-channel), interface compatibility (I2S, PCM, TDM, SoundWire), and dynamic range performance.
